Hindrance effect of tides on water exchanges between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden

As a semienclosed marginal sea, the Red Sea connects with open ocean through narrow strait at its southern end, known as Bab-al-Mandeb (BAM) strait. The water exchange between and Gulf of Aden BAM is crucial for mass transformations thermohaline circulation in well nutrient supply to ocean. In this study, three-dimensional high-resolution nonhydrostatic MIT general model (MITgcm) was used investigate tidal influence on simulations without forcing. We found that effects winter were insignificant; however, summer intrusion Intermediate Water (GAIW) strongly affected. When simulation includes forcing, along-axis northern extension GAIW reduced by u 100 km monthly mean volume transport decreased 20% average. Two actors possibly contribute hindrance tides are (i) residual currents propagate direction opposite pathway nd (ii) enhanced vertical mixing pycnocline near benthic topography strait, which triggers more instabilities along intrusion.
